Rangers have been told that top summer target Luca Stephenson wants to leave Liverpool on a permanent deal following two seasons on loan at Dundee United.

The 22-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance for Liverpool and it has been widely reported that he could be sold by Arne Slot’s side this summer, despite the fact he signed a new contract at Anfield last August.

Rangers club captain James Tavernier will leave Ibrox after an illustrious 11-year spell this summer and the versatile Stephenson, who can play as a right-back, a central midfielder or a right winger, has been earmarked as a possible replacement.

Danny Rohl’s side are understood to be the frontrunners to land Stephenson this summer and Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin has now confirmed that a permanent deal is likely to be on the cards ahead of next season.

“Can Luca come back again? Honestly, my feeling is Luca wants to be somewhere permanently,” he told Glasgow World.

“He has been on loan for a few successive seasons, his time at Dundee United is the longest he’s stayed anywhere for a considerable period and I’d expect him to want that stability and chance to kick on. Luca’s still under contract at Liverpool and, given how well he’s done here, there would be a considerable transfer fee.”

Rangers’ summer transfer plan

Rangers are expected to back Rohl in the transfer market this summer and Stephenson is one of several players they are eager to bring to Ibrox ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

It has been reported that Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt, who is currently on loan at Hull City, wants to join Rangers this summer, having been identified as a top target, while Dundee defender Luke Graham is also being pursued.

Interest in Gelhardt comes amid rumours that summer signing Youssef Chermiti could depart Ibrox after just one season at the club, with Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven among the teams eager to sign him.

Rangers may also be required to sign a new centre-back due to significant transfer interest in Emmanuel Fernandez, who has caught the eye since his arrival from Peterborough United last year.
