Dakar 2026: Obatoyinbo Leads Nigeria’s Swimming Effort in Dakar as Akinsanmi Makes Youth Olympic Games Debut

Nigeria’s young swimming prospects, Kashope Obatoyinbo and Tobiloba Omolola Akinsanmi, gained valuable international experience at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, with both athletes representing the country in the 100m Freestyle events.

Sports247 reports that the 16-year-old Obatoyinbo finished 29th overall in the men’s 100m Freestyle, placing among the top 30 in a field of 73 swimmers who competed in the event.

His performance marked an important milestone in his development, as he tested his ability against young swimmers from different countries on the international stage.

Obatoyinbo also enjoyed personal support from his mother, who travelled with him to Dakar and remained on ground throughout the competition to provide encouragement and moral support.

Her presence highlighted the important role of family support in the development of young athletes, particularly those taking their first steps into major international competitions.

Meanwhile, Tobiloba Omolola Akinsanmi represented Nigeria in the women’s 100m Freestyle heats, finishing fifth in her heat with a time of 1:03.33.

Although the result did not place her among the leading swimmers in the event, the competition provided another opportunity for the young Nigerian to gain exposure and measure her progress against international opposition.

For both swimmers, participation at the Youth Olympic Games represents more than their finishing positions. Competing at this level offers valuable lessons in preparation, discipline and performance under international competition conditions.

At 16, Obatoyinbo has already gained an important experience with his 29th-place finish, while Akinsanmi will also look to build on her outing as she continues her swimming development.

Their participation in Dakar underscores the importance of sustained investment in youth swimming, athlete development and international exposure for Nigeria’s emerging talents.

Both athletes will hope to translate the experience into improved performances and greater achievements in future competitions.
