Manchester City suffered another frustrating Premier League defeat after Brighton claimed a 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium, with Yasin Ayari scoring the decisive goal.
Brighton arrived knowing they would have to be disciplined against one of the league’s strongest sides, and they delivered exactly the kind of performance needed to leave Manchester with all three points.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Ayari capitalised on a defensive mistake to put the visitors ahead. A dangerous Brighton attack caused confusion in the City defence, and the midfielder found himself in the right position to finish from close range.
City immediately went in search of an equaliser and enjoyed long spells of possession, but turning that control into clear-cut chances proved difficult. Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and the visiting defence stood firm as the home side struggled to find a way through.
The hosts continued to push after the break, creating opportunities to get back into the game. However, their finishing let them down, with several promising attacks failing to produce the goal they desperately needed.
Even late in the contest, City could not find a breakthrough. Nico O’Reilly came close in the closing stages, but his header went wide as Brighton held on for an impressive away victory.
The result is a significant one for Brighton, who move to 19 points and sit third in the Premier League standings, just two points behind the leaders.
For Manchester City, however, it is a second consecutive league defeat. While there is still plenty of football to play, dropping points in back-to-back matches will be a concern as the pressure grows in the title race.
Brighton will take plenty of confidence from this performance, having shown that they can compete with the biggest teams even away from home.
