Road to LA 2028: Eric Chelle Drills 28 Olympic Eagles in Ikenne Ahead of Crucial DR Congo U-23 AFCON Qualifier

Nigeria’s Olympic Eagles have officially commenced preparations for their crucial 2027 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against the Democratic Republic of Congo, with head coach Eric Chelle supervising 28 players during Tuesday’s opening training session at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne, Ogun State.

Sports247 reports that the training camp marks the beginning of an important phase in Nigeria’s qualification campaign, with the team aiming to overcome DR Congo and move closer to securing a place at the 2027 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Beyond continental qualification, the competition carries additional significance as it provides a pathway towards the men’s football tournament at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The Olympic Eagles’ opening training session featured 28 players as the coaching crew began assessing individual fitness levels, technical abilities and tactical understanding ahead of the decisive encounters.

Tuesday’s programme included recovery exercises, ball work, passing drills and small-sided games designed to improve coordination, movement and overall team chemistry.

The session also provided Chelle and his technical staff with an opportunity to evaluate the available players as preparations intensify for the two-legged contest.

With limited time before the opening fixture, the coaching crew will be looking to establish a balanced squad capable of competing effectively against a determined Congolese side.

Nigeria will begin their second-round qualifying campaign away from home, with the first leg scheduled for November 13 in Lubumbashi, DR Congo.

The Olympic Eagles will subsequently return to Nigeria for the reverse fixture on November 17 at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne. The two encounters are expected to provide a stern examination of Nigeria’s readiness, particularly with qualification for the next round at stake.

Securing a positive result in Lubumbashi could prove crucial before the return leg, where the Olympic Eagles will hope to capitalise on home advantage.

The coaching staff will also be focused on defensive organisation, midfield control and attacking efficiency as the team prepares for the challenge.

For Nigeria, the qualifying campaign represents another opportunity to re-establish its presence among Africa’s leading U-23 football nations. The Olympic Eagles famously won gold at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games before claiming silver at Beijing 2008 and bronze at Rio 2016.

However, Nigeria missed the men’s football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics, making the journey towards Los Angeles 2028 particularly significant. A successful qualification campaign would strengthen the country’s ambition of returning to the Olympic stage.

With preparations now underway in Ikenne, attention will turn towards squad development, tactical execution and building the confidence required for the upcoming fixtures.

The Olympic Eagles must overcome DR Congo across both legs to keep their continental qualification ambitions alive. For Chelle and his players, the mission is clear: navigate the DR Congo challenge, advance towards the 2027 U-23 AFCON and keep Nigeria’s dream of returning to the Olympic football stage in Los Angeles alive.
