Liverpool have learned highly-rated Club Brugge striker Nicolo Tresoldi almost moved to Merseyside as a teenager.

Tresoldi has developed a reputation as one of the best young players in Europe since joining Belgian giants Brugge in July 2025.

The 22-year-old scored 22 goals in 58 games for Brugge last season, while he has already netted nine times in just 11 appearances this term.

Tresoldi has been quick to catch the eye in this season’s Champions League, scoring a hat-trick in the thrilling 4-3 win at Inter Milan on Tuesday.

However, Liverpool have now learned Tresoldi could have ended up on their doorstep if his family had made a different decision when he was 13.

Nicolo’s father Emanuele has revealed they were close to moving to Liverpool due to his wife’s work in civil aviation. However, the family ended up moving to Hannover, Germany instead.

In an interview with Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Emanuele – a former defender for Atalanta – said: “It all happened by chance.

“We moved around a lot because of my wife’s job; she works in civil aviation. At one point, it seemed like we were going to move to Liverpool.”

Tresoldi earned stripes with Hannover in Germany’s second tier

Nicolo went on to join local side Hannover, where he eventually rose from the youth ranks into the first team in July 2022.

After scoring 14 goals in 80 games for the 2. Bundesliga outfit, Nicolo joined Brugge for a reported €7.5million (£6.3m) last summer.

And such is his form in Belgium that Arsenal, Manchester United and Barcelona are being loosely linked with his signature.

Tresoldi has a decision to make on which national team he wants to represent in the future, with Italy, Germany and Argentina among his options.

Born to an Italian father and an Argentine mother, with a part of his upbringing taking place in Germany, Tresoldi qualifies for all three nations.

Tresoldi came close to being selected for Germany’s World Cup squad in the summer and currently represents their Under-21 side.

Liverpool meanwhile return to action this evening when they face Austrian side LASK in the Champions League.
