Chelsea owners BlueCo have been widely criticised throughout their four-year stint in charge of the club, and their bold recruitment policy has failed to reap any significant rewards in regards to a Premier League title charge.

However, their transfer activity at first-team level this summer was mostly positive. Morgan Rogers has hit the ground running with eight goal contributions in eight games, Jordan Henderson netted a shock brace versus Bournemouth on Saturday, and Danny Welbeck is performing his role expertly with three goals in two Carabao Cup matches.

Meanwhile, Maxence Lacroix and Emiliano Martinez may be part of a fairly leaky defence, but neither have been notably poor during the early weeks of their Chelsea careers.

In addition, Chelsea’s use of the loan market was excellent over the summer. Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and Reggie Walsh are both impressing in the EFL, while Shumaira Mheuka is already making his mark at Celtic, despite the fact he is yet to score his first goal.

The same can’t be said for Jesse Derry, however.

Chelsea’s biggest summer transfer mistake

Derry joined Chelsea from Crystal Palace’s academy last summer and he made three first-team appearances during his debut campaign at the club, including his first ever Premier League start versus Nottingham Forest in May.

With 16 goals and assists in 29 youth-team games last season, it was clear that Derry needed to play regular senior football in 2026-27, and Chelsea wasted no time in pursuing a loan deal.

With Geovany Quenda arriving at Stamford Bridge from Sporting CP, a space opened up at the Portuguese giants and Derry was soon pictured being mobbed at Lisbon airport after signing a season-long loan deal with Rui Borges’ side.

After a promising pre-season, Derry was expected to play a fairly prominent role this term, but he has been unable to force his way into contention.

Derry has played just 44 minutes across all competitions so far this season, from a possible 990, and he was an unused substitute in five Sporting matches before his brief cameo appearance against Lens in the Champions League on Tuesday,

The England U20 winger, who scored once and provided two assists in three games during the recent international break, is currently behind Nestory Irankunda, Geny Catamo and Flavio Goncalves in the pecking order and Chelsea’s decision to send him to Sporting has already backfired massively.

Derry simply needed to play regular senior football to continue his progress, but that hasn’t happened and with the England youngster unlikely to break into Borges’ preferred starting XI anytime soon, Chelsea must consider attempting to end the loan agreement in January in order to avoid wasting an entire season of the 19-year-old’s development.
