Russell Wilson refuses to rule out NFL return as New York Giants face quarterback crisis

NFL legend Russell Wilson opened up on his transition from the field to the broadcast booth but remained tight-lipped on whether he would ever consider a return.

The 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback transitioned into broadcasting this season, making his debut for CBS on its NFL Today pregame coverage.

The career move came after he found himself at a crossroads after his one-year deal with the New York Giants ended last season. Though he began as the franchise’s starting quarterback, he was later demoted for Jaxson Dart before landing in free agency.

However, rather than land somewhere else in the league, Wilson opted to walk away from playing in favor of the TV studio.

And it has proved to have been the right decision as the former Super Bowl winner, who is expecting his fourth child with R&B star Ciara, gushed over his experience.

‘CBS has been amazing,’ he told the Daily Mail during an appearance at an event for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

‘Just [being in] the studio and the guys in the studio, Kyle Long with Bill Cowher and James Brown, two Hall of Famers in that sense. And then also Nate Burleson.

‘I had to learn so much from these guys, and we’re having a blast. The show is kicking butt. We’re doing great, but also too, I think we’re really enjoying the game of football. We love it so much, and I think that’s the best part.’

When asked if he loved the game so much that he misses suiting up week in, week out, Wilson insisted that his new role was gifting him with a new outlook.

‘I always loved playing, obviously throwing touchdowns,’ he admitted. ‘But talking about the game and experiencing that… I think to do it with the best and the guys that we have, and not to mention Kyle and I have our Set Hut show every Tuesday. So that’s been a lot of fun.’

He added: ‘I get a great sense of football every day, every week, and it’s so much fun.’

One of the big talking points in the league this past week has been Wilson’s former team and their quarterback dilemma.

The Giants lost starting quarterback Dart after he was ruled out for the remainder of the regular season following a knee injury suffered during their Week 2 defeat to the LA Rams.

Jameis Winston stepped up into the QB1 role, leading New York to a gritty 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Should NFL veterans like Russell Wilson stay retired or return during a team’s quarterback crisis?

However, the Giants wasted no time adding depth to their injury-hit quarterback room, trading for JJ McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings on Monday.

Many had questioned whether the Giants could look to lure Wilson out of the studio and back to the field to add more veteran experience amid their crisis.

But the former signal caller remained mum on the possibility when asked if he had heard from his former team about a return, instead, opting to endorse Winston.

‘It’s so unfortunate about Jaxson,’ he said. ‘I know he’s worked his butt off so much. But I know James is gonna do a great job.’

Wilson spoke to the Daily Mail at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s annual National Youth of the Year celebration at Cipriani South Street in New York City.

‘I think it’s so special to be here,’ he said of the event. ‘You know, some of my favorite days are Sundays, obviously playing football for all these years and now working with CBS and then Tuesdays, going to the Children’s Hospital.

‘But nights like this are really, really special to be here in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club.’

He continued: ‘We had an amazing night last night with our Why Not You Foundation. We partner with the Boys and Girls Club in so many different ways. We launched our first Why Not You center in Pittsburgh. We also launched one in the Bronx, Kips Bay. We have a few others that we’re launching.’
