Juventus are ready to move for Virgil van Dijk if the defender does not sign a new contract with Liverpool, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The Netherlands defender has less than a year to run on his current terms and can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January.

BBC Sport says “it remains to be seen” whether Liverpool will offer Van Dijk an extension or whether the 35-year-old will look to leave next summer.

And Italian newspaper Gazzetta understands Juventus are attentive to the situation as they look to strengthen their defence at the end of the season.

The Serie A giants reportedly sent a scout to watch Van Dijk and his Netherlands team-mate Brian Brobbey in the 1-1 Nations League draw with Germany.

Juventus are believed to be sweet on Sunderland striker Brobbey as they have no plans to sign Newcastle United loanee Nick Woltemade on a permanent basis.

Gazzetta also claims the Old Lady are keen on Manchester United forward Benjamin Sesko, who has scored two goals so far this season.

In addition to Van Dijk, Juventus are keeping tabs on a number of players whose contracts are due to expire next summer, as per Gazzetta.

Juventus are interested in signing RB Leipzig left-back David Raum, AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori and Manchester City midfielder Mateo Kovacic on free transfers.

Van Dijk has ‘nothing to report’ on contract situation

When asked for an update on his contract situation ahead of the international break, Van Dijk said he was focused on the “present” and had “nothing to report”.

Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo reported earlier in the week that Real Madrid have an interest in signing Van Dijk on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Van Dijk has been in fine form for Liverpool so far this season, helping the Reds keep clean sheets against Ipswich Town, Fulham and Bournemouth.

He joined Liverpool from Southampton for €88million (£75m) in January 2018 and has become one of the best centre-backs in Premier League history.

Van Dijk has made 380 appearances for the Merseysiders and won nine honours including two Premier League titles and one Champions League.

He is in line to feature for the Netherlands when they travel to Greece in the Nations League this evening, before they host Serbia in Eindhoven on Sunday.

Van Dijk will then return to Liverpool ahead of the mouth-watering Premier League clash against Manchester City on Sunday, 11 October at Anfield.
