Manchester City striker Erling Haaland will become a transfer target for Arsenal “without a shadow of a doubt” if the Etihad side are relegated from the Premier League.
Reports indicate that City have been found guilty of 114 of 115 charges levelled against them by the Premier League, raising the possibility of relegation from England’s top flight, either via automatic expulsion or a points deduction.
Although the club owners continue to believe that their innocence will be proven, others do not appear to be so confident, with Arsenal laying the groundwork for a potential move for Haaland, FootballTransfers has been informed.
Arsenal plotting possible Haaland swoop
Sources have revealed that Haaland will certainly become a target for the Gunners if City are relegated – a punishment that would instantly throw into doubt the future of the Norway international forward in Manchester.
FootballTransfers has been told: “Arsenal would, without any shadow of a doubt, make a serious play to bring Erling Haaland to the Emirates.”
The Gunners have already shown a willingness to put up an exceptional amount of money for a superstar player as they were willing to smash their transfer record in the summer to sign Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid.
Although that move did not happen, it was still a statement of intent from the reigning Premier League champions that they will not shy away from signing superstars.
Clearly, there is still a huge amount that would have to happen before Haaland to Arsenal becomes a realistic possibility, but sources have been very clear that Mikel Arteta’s side plan on being in the conversation for Haaland and are prepared to make a major financial commitment to get any deal done should City be heavily punished.
The missing piece in the puzzle?
A clinical centre-forward is arguably the one position that Arsenal are genuinely lacking a world-class option in their squad.
Viktor Gyokeres has failed to become the prolific striker that Arteta might have hoped when he arrived last summer, which in turn blocked the Spaniard’s intention of using Kai Havertz in a deeper role.
Beyond that pair, Arsenal do not have any particular options through the middle, which had led to speculation that they might seek another striker in the transfer window just closed.
Haaland is widely regarded as the ultimate centre-forward in the world at present, having scored 117 goals in only 137 Premier League appearances.
