Former Super Eagles winger Tijani Babangida is celebrating his 53rd birthday today, September 25, with his career still remembered for pace, attacking ability and important moments in Nigeria’s colours.
Born in Kaduna in 1973, Babangida built a successful career in European football, spending a large part of his playing years in the Netherlands. He represented clubs including Roda JC, VVV-Venlo, Ajax and Vitesse, before later spells in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and China.
His international career with Nigeria began in 1994, and he went on to make 36 FIFA appearances for the Super Eagles, scoring five goals.
One of the defining moments of his career came at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, where Babangida was part of the Nigerian team that won the men’s football gold medal. Olympedia records him as a member of the gold-medal-winning squad, while later accounts of the tournament note that he played in all of Nigeria’s matches.
Babangida also featured for Nigeria at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, where he scored in the Super Eagles’ 4-1 Round of 16 defeat to Denmark. He was also involved with the national team at the Africa Cup of Nations.
At club level, his time at Ajax was another significant part of his career. He joined the Dutch giants in 1996 and remained there until 2003, with loan spells during that period.
After ending his playing career, Babangida remained involved in Nigerian football. He has served as President of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) and has continued to participate in discussions concerning players and the administration of the game.
As he marks 53, Babangida’s playing career remains part of a memorable generation of Nigerian footballers, particularly the squad that made history with Olympic gold in Atlanta.
His birthday provides another opportunity for football supporters to remember the former winger’s contribution to the Super Eagles and Nigerian football.
