Bendel Insurance coach Kennedy Boboye has raised concerns over the shortage of natural goal scorers in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), saying teams are being forced to improvise with players who are not regular strikers.
Boboye spoke after his side secured a narrow 2-1 win over Ikorodu City on Wednesday, despite missing several chances during the game chances.
The experienced coach said his players work on finishing regularly in training but admitted that converting chances in actual matches continues to be a problem.
“We still keep working because it’s something we do every day,” Boboye said.
According to him, the problem goes beyond Bendel Insurance, as many teams in the league are also dealing with a lack of quality strikers.
“Actually, it’s a problem everywhere in the country because, I’m sorry to say this, we don’t actually have quality strikers in the league,” he said.
Boboye explained that Bendel Insurance have had to convert some of their wide players into attackers because they do not have enough natural centre-forwards.
“Most of the strikers you see playing for Bendel Insurance are not point men. They are players who play from the sides, but we decided to convert them to attackers just to make up for the team,” he added.
The Coach comments have again brought attention to the challenge of finding reliable goal scorers in the NPFL.
