Liverpool have officially completed the surprising signing of Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo.
The Uruguay international has joined the Reds on an initial loan deal after the Premier League side reached a quick agreement with Barcelona over the weekend. Liverpool were in desperate need of defensive reinforcements, and they have acted quickly and decisively.
Giovanni Leoni is still recovering from an ACL tear, while the oft-injured Joe Gomez has suffered a pre-season setback. Although Liverpool had already signed Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennais, he was effectively their fallback after missing out on Marc Guehi last season.
With Ibrahima Konate having departed for Real Madrid, Liverpool needed another body in addition to Jacquet. Araujo has now arrived in a move that has certainly raised eyebrows in the club’s fanbase.
The 27-year-old has had fitness struggles and has a reputation for being erratic. The fact that Barcelona supporters are not necessarily sad to see him go is quite telling. Nevertheless, it is a low-risk deal for Liverpool.
Liverpool sign Araujo
The Reds have to shoulder his significant salary, but beyond that, the move appears to be a no-brainer. Liverpool have a purchase option believed to be worth €55 million, but they are under no obligation to exercise it.
If Araujo flops, Liverpool can just send him back to Barcelona at the end of the season when youngsters like Leoni and Jacquet will have hopefully matured into reliable senior players and pre-season revelation Ifeanyi Ndukwe has secured a work permit.
And if Araujo actually turns out to be an elite player for Liverpool, then the move will have been an unqualified success – even if it still likely wouldn’t mean that the club would look to make his stay permanent.
€55m is a steep price for a player whose Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) has dropped to just €25.3m over the past year. Araujo previously peaked at €58.2, so there is clearly a very good player in there, Andoni Iraola just needs to unlock him.
“I can’t wait to get started. I’m very, very happy,” Araujo said after being unveiled. “I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I’m excited to meet my teammates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated and really up for getting going.
“I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take. As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly.
“As I say, I’m super happy to be here and excited to get started. I’m glad about the interest and it was the right move at the right time.”
