Manchester United have identified RB Leipzig defender David Raum as a potential alternative to Lewis Hall.
The Red Devils have been in the market for a new left-back all summer. Luke Shaw isn’t getting any younger, and despite coming off a good season fitness-wise, his injury history is always a lingering concern.
Man Utd’s dream target for the position is Newcastle star Hall, but there is now a growing acceptance that he will not be on the move this summer. Having already lost three key players, the Magpies have made it abundantly clear that the England international is not for sale.
There have been conflicting reports on Hall’s willingness to make a transfer. Some have claimed that he wants to take the next step in his career and also jump ship, while others have pointed to the fact that he is a boyhood Newcastle fan and keen to sign a new contract.
Whatever the case, TEAMtalk claims that Man Utd, though still interested, have resigned themselves to the fact that Hall is unlikely to be playing his football at Old Trafford this season. Consequently, they are exploring alternatives.
Man Utd want Raum – but there’s a problem
Having recently linked the Red Devils with a move for Racing Santander starlet Jorge Salinas, the outlet now asserts that RB Leipzig captain Raum has re-emerged on the club’s radar.
Man Utd were previously in contact with the marauding full-back, but no move materialised at the time. They are now back in the mix to sign him because his contract situation and price tag make him attractive.
The Germany international only has a year left on his deal. What’s more, there is a staggered release clause in his current contract, which has gradually decreased year on year. The clause is now worth somewhere in the region of €40m, though its exact value remains unclear.
By his own admission, there hasn’t been any progress regarding a potential extension. Raum has repeatedly been asked by German media about his contract situation and insisted that he is very happy in Leipzig, but he has added that any offer needs to reflect his importance.
On paper, this would suggest that the door to a potential Man Utd transfer is ajar. Indeed, the above-mentioned publication claims that Raum is open to a transfer to Old Trafford.
The problem is that, just a couple of days ago, he effectively promised that he won’t move this summer. Speaking to RBlive, the 28-year-old declared that he would “definitely play for RB Leipzig for at least another year.”
Raums emphasised that he was “very relaxed” about the situation and that everything was “still very, very quiet.” The reason for this is simple: “I haven’t received any other offers yet, to be honest.”
He added: “At the moment, I still see myself here. I see myself as captain of this team, which is going into a Champions League season that I also earned on a personal level.” New Leipzig head coach Martin Demichelis has confirmed that Raum will retain the captain’s armband this season.
Of course, the situation could yet change were Man Utd to become a serious option, but at present, there is nothing to suggest that Raum will leave Leipzig before the end of his contract.
