Matthias Jaissle has declared he believes ‘unreservedly’ in Newcastle’s ambition and direction for the future after being confirmed as Eddie Howe’s successor.
The German coach joins from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli, where he led the PIF-owned club to Asian Champions League success in 2025 and 2026.
Jaissle’s appointment comes amid a summer of upheaval at Newcastle, with Howe’s five-year spell in charge coming to an end along with the departures of several star names.
Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali left earlier in the summer for Barcelona and Tottenham, while club captain Bruno Guimaraes is closing in on a £75million move to Arsenal.
Jaissle, 38, stressed that Newcastle have a ‘clear vision’ as he vowed to work to deliver success to the club.
‘It is an incredible honour to become head coach of Newcastle United. This is one of the biggest clubs in European football, with a unique history, identity and supporter base, and I am excited to experience that passion and connection first-hand,’ Jaissle said.

Jaissle will take charge for the first time when Newcastle face Valencia on Saturday at the end of the camp in La Manga.
Newcastle have described Jaissle as ‘one of Europe’s leading young coaches’, with the club stating that he emerged as the ‘clear outstanding candidate’ during their recruitment process.
Jaissle had previously coached Red Bull Salzburg and led the club to two Austrian titles, before moving to Al-Ahli, where he guided the Saudi Arabian side to successive AFC Champions League triumphs.
