Goodness Nwachukwu Reveals Motivation Behind Glasgow 2026 World Record

Nigeria’s para-athletics star Goodness Nwachukwu has opened up on the determination, resilience and motivation that inspired her record-breaking performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Nwachukwu delivered one of Team Nigeria’s biggest moments at the Games, winning gold in the women’s F42-44/F61-64 discus and smashing the world record with a stunning 39.66m throw.

But the historic performance was not straightforward.

Her early attempts failed to produce the distance she wanted, leaving her needing to remain composed and find a way to respond under pressure.

That was when the experience and mental strength built over years of overcoming challenges came to the fore.

Nwachukwu has previously spoken openly about the difficulties surrounding her career, including the long journeys to training, financial challenges and the physical demands of preparing as a para-athlete.

“These challenges have only made me stronger,” she said in an interview with Commonwealth Sport before Glasgow 2026.

“I stay positive and keep training because I truly love sport.”

That mindset was evident in Glasgow.

Rather than allowing her slow start to derail her challenge, Nwachukwu stayed focused and eventually produced a huge 39.66m throw to retain her Commonwealth title and rewrite the world record.

The achievement also fulfilled the ambition she had carried into the Games after her Birmingham 2022 triumph.

“I want to do even better than I did in 2022 and continue inspiring others,”

Nwachukwu had said ahead of Glasgow. “Everything is in God’s hands, but I have hope and excitement for what is ahead.”

Four years after winning gold and setting a world record at Birmingham 2022, the Nigerian returned to the Commonwealth stage with greater experience and an even stronger desire to prove herself.

Her motivation goes beyond medals.

Nwachukwu has repeatedly spoken about wanting her journey to inspire people living with physical challenges and athletes who may be tempted to give up.

“I tell them that sport can change their lives, just like it changed mine,” she said, reflecting on how she encourages people facing similar difficulties.

That message was perfectly reflected in her Glasgow performance.

After an uncertain beginning, Nwachukwu refused to surrender. She remained patient, trusted her preparation and produced the decisive throw when it mattered most.

The 39.66m effort was more than a gold-medal-winning distance. It was a statement of resilience from an athlete who has repeatedly had to overcome obstacles to reach the highest level.

Nwachukwu’s journey has also been supported by the Commonwealth Sport GAPS programme, which played an important role in her preparation for Birmingham 2022 and her development as an elite para-athlete. She has described the programme as a source of opportunity and inspiration.

“I’m so proud and so excited to be part of GAPS, it means a lot and brings a lot of opportunities for me,” she said. “I want to make myself an inspiration to upcoming athletes and to achieve more in and out of sport.”

In Glasgow, she achieved exactly that.

The world record, the gold medal and the manner in which she fought back from a difficult start combined to underline the qualities that have defined her career — discipline, belief, perseverance and an unwavering desire to inspire.

For Goodness Nwachukwu, the 39.66m throw was not simply another record.

It was the latest chapter in a remarkable journey that continues to show that setbacks can be overcome and that, with determination and belief, barriers can become stepping stones to greatness.
