Commonwealth Games women’s 53kg weightlifting gold medal winner, Onome Omolola Didih has dedicated her achievement to her later mother, who she revealed introduced her to the sport and bought her first kit for her, Sports247 reports.
Didih made this known after pulling off a superb feat in Glasgow, Scotland, where she lifted 93kg in snatch, then followed with 113kg in clean and jerk, to finish with a total of 206kg in a record-breaking outing, following which she said her mother’s support is a major part of her success story.
Born on June 12th, 2004, the 22-year-old Didih continued her rise to international prominence by clinching Nigeria’s fifth gold medal at Glasgow 2026, while shattering three Games records, as she finished ahead of Gyaneshwari Yadav of India (silver) and Rebeka Groulx of Canada (bronze).
It is a continuation of her majestic strides that started in May, when she won three gold medals at the African Weightlifting Championship in Ismailia, Egypt, with continental records in snatch as well as clean and jerk, after which she won gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in India.
She went on to disclose that her latest achievement was special because her mother, who always wished to see her win medals, is no longer alive to celebrate with her, but Didih consoled herself in knwoing that she has achived a fitting tribute to the woman who helped her get started in weightlifting.
Didih disclosed, “My first kit in weightlifting was bought for me by my mum. She was in full support of me starting the sport, together with my dad. It was my mum who took me to the sports centre. She spoke to someone who was also a weightlifter.
“The person directed her and she took me there. She is no more, but she’s still resting in perfect peace because it has always been her joy seeing me win medals in competitions. I’m sure she would be so proud of me. That would be very, very nice.”
