Malawi continued their brilliant debut at the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a second consecutive victory, thanks to a 3-1 win over Egypt in their second Group C game on Saturday.
A brace from Rose Smith Kadzere and a goal from Temwa Chawinga put Malawi in control, while Eman Kassem grabbed Egypt’s only goal of the tie.
The Scorchers had to play most parts of the second half with 10 players after Rose Alufandika was shown a straight red card.
Also, the win moves Malawi a step closer to a historic quarter-final place at this year’s tournament.
Kadzere opened the scoring with 10 minutes left in the first half doubling the lead in two minutes off added time before the break.
In the 52nd minute Malawi had a player sent off as Alufandika was shown a straight red card.
Despite playing with a player short Malawi extended their lead on 69 minutes thanks to Chawinga, who registered her third goal of the competition.
But just two minutes after Malawi went 3-0 ahead Hassan scored for Egypt to make it 3-1.
Malawi, now on six points, temporarily top the group and would have to wait for the outcome of the match between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Zambia to seal their place in the quarterfinals.
