Commonwealth Games 2026 men’s shot gold medalist, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has admitted he intially worried that he might not be able to pull off the achivement, due to rough weather conditions that continued across the terrain in Glasgow, Scotland.
Sports247 reports that the 32-year-old bulky athlete secured his first major title outside Africa by edging tops of a fiercely contested competition by just four centimetres, following which he described the achievement as surreal, having wondered if he would ever win a prestigious medal.
With torrid conditions at the stadium in Glasgow threatening to put his dreams on hold for much longer, Enekwechi disclosed that he had to dig deep, kept on swinging the best way he possibly could and his persistence eventually paid off.
“I was very concerned. It was still cold and windy. At this stage of the outdoor season, you expect sunshine and warm temperatures, not chilly conditions. It made it difficult to stay warm, and we were literally throwing uphill, which is almost symbolic of my career. It’s always an uphill battle.
“The conditions just weren’t ideal. If you wanted a true measure of what we were capable of, you’d probably have to add some distance to the marks. But everyone faced the same challenge. We were all incredibly close throughout the competition.
“In the end, it was enough to win, and that’s what matters. The distance didn’t matter. What mattered was winning the gold medal. The big throws will come, but this gold medal is far sweeter than any personal best I could have achieved,” Enekwechi recounted.
