Team Nigeria’s impressive run at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games continued on Tuesday as rising quarter-miler Edidiong Okon Udo produced a commanding performance to win his opening-round heat of the men’s 400 metres and book a place in the semi-finals in style.
The 27-year-old Nigerian announced himself as a genuine medal contender after storming to victory in 45.73 seconds, comfortably finishing ahead of Barbados’ Desean Boyce (46.55) and Grenada’s Michael Francois (46.62) at Scotstoun Stadium.

Udo looked in complete control from the opening 200 metres, maintaining his rhythm around the final bend before powering home to seal an emphatic heat victory and send a strong message to the rest of the field.
The performance is another major boost for Team Nigeria, whose athletics squad has continued to build momentum following a series of impressive qualification performances across the sprints and quarter-mile events.
Udo arrived in Glasgow in outstanding form after clocking a personal best of 44.91 seconds earlier this season, a time that ranks him among Nigeria’s fastest one-lap runners and one of the athletes to watch at these Commonwealth Games.
His qualification follows Tuesday morning’s success for Patience Okon-George and Esther Elo Joseph, who both advanced to the women’s 400m semi-finals, adding to the earlier progress of Nigerian sprinters Favour Ashe, Nicholas Fakorede, Kayinsola Ajayi, Miracle Ezechukwu, Blessing Ogundiran, and Rosemary Chukwuma.
With Nigeria already celebrating a remarkable weightlifting gold rush and the historic qualification of the women’s wheelchair basketball team for the quarter-finals, athletics is rapidly becoming another source of optimism for the country’s growing medal ambitions in Glasgow.
