As Team Nigeria starts contests in various events at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, a former hammer throw national champion, Gabriel Opuana has served a strong hint that the contingent will return home with a haul of medals, due to what he described as top-notch preparations.
Sports247 reports that the 63-year-old Opuana, who is currently Team Nigeria’s head coach for throw events, declared that the country’s athletes ‘have never had it so good,’ then praised National Sports Commission (NSC) officials for providing the best conditions he has ever seen for the country’s athletes.

Opuana, who also serves as an advocate for athletes’ welfare, noted the presence of ex-international long jumper, Yusuf Alli as chef de mission, which he described as a huge motivational factor for the current set of athletes, and thanked the NSC for prioritising the proper welfare for the competitors.
He affirmed, “We are happy to have Yusuf Alli around. He is always available to provide everything that is needed. The NSC has done a good job and we must commend them. The athletes are happy, a reasonable daily allowance is being paid and kits have been supplied.
“The accommodation and training facilities are excellent, the food is good. We haven’t had any of those usual issues we normally have in camp. For a long time in our history of preparations for international competitions, we have never had it so good.”
Sports247 reports that the athletics contingent have a huge role in bringing to reality the NSC’s charge for between 16 to 20 medals at Glagow 2026, where Team Nigeria will aim to surpass their feat of winning only 12 gold in a total collection of 35 medals at the last edition in Birmingham, England.
