Tottenham wonderkid earmarked by FA for international call-up ahead of next World Cup

The Tottenham Hotspur youngster has not played much for the club yet but his country are keeping close tabs on him

Tottenham’s young left-back Souza has reportedly been earmarked by the Brazilian FA to enter their new cycle of players for the next World Cup.

This current edition of the tournament is coming to a close this weekend with Spain and Argentina to play out the final in New Jersey and international associations are already planning for the World Cup in 2030, which will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain.

Now the media in Brazil have stated that despite his lack of action for Tottenham since his £13million move from Santos in the January transfer window, Souza is set to be part of the plans for the coming years under Carlo Ancelotti. The full-back has a burgeoning reputation back home and has been dubbed as ‘the next Marcelo’.

RTI Esporte has reported, as picked up by Sport Witness, that the 20-year-old is one of the players being monitored by the Brazilian FA as it begins planning for life beyond Douglas Santos, who will be 36 by the time the next World Cup is played. Souza was part of the squad that won the South American Under-17 Championship in 2023.

The media outlet claims that Souza’s first opportunity with the senior national team could potentially come in September when Carlo Ancelotti will announce the squad for the friendlies against Australia.

Souza has been adapting to a new country, a new life and a very different league over the past six months. The Santos fans were sad to see the left-back depart after helping them in their relegation battle to instead help Tottenham in theirs.

He played just four matches for Spurs last season though across 144 minutes, his two starts coming as a right winger in the 1-1 draw at Liverpool in March after being sacrificed as the left wing-back after Micky van de Ven’s first half red card against Crystal Palace in the previous Premier League game.

Former Tottenham boss Thomas Frank called the Brazilian “one of the brightest left-back talents in the world” when he signed.

Andy Robertson’s arrival though this summer to add to Destiny Udogie means Souza could be allowed to head out on loan this summer to ensure he gets regular football to continue his development and Roberto De Zerbi will make the final decision on that.

The young Brazilian has not appeared in any pre-season footage yet and football.london understands that’s because he has been ill in recent days.

He now has an added international incentive to work hard when he returns to the Hotspur Way training complex on top of the need to impress De Zerbi.
