Team Nigeria has underlined its growing dominance in African flag football after winning two gold medals and one silver at the 2026 NFL Flag African Championship in Nairobi, Kenya, delivering a major confidence boost ahead of this year’s IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Germany.

The Nigerian contingent produced another outstanding display at the continental showpiece, with the women’s national team successfully defending its African title, while the U-13 mixed team also secured gold to cap an impressive campaign.
Nigeria narrowly missed out on a clean sweep after the men’s team settled for silver, losing a closely contested final to Egypt, one of the continent’s emerging flag football powerhouses.
The impressive performances reaffirm Nigeria’s status as one of Africa’s leading nations in flag football and provide valuable momentum ahead of the global championship later this year.
Reacting to the team’s success, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, praised the athletes and officials for another historic achievement, describing flag football as one of the fastest-growing sports in Nigeria.
“I congratulate the Nigeria Flag Football teams for once again demonstrating their dominance in Africa. This achievement reflects the immense sporting talent we have as a nation and shows what can be accomplished when athletes receive the right support,” Olopade said.
The NSC Director General also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Federation of American Football (NFAF), led by President Babajide Akeredolu, for the federation’s continued progress in developing the sport across the country.
Olopade urged the teams to use their success in Kenya as motivation ahead of the World Championships, assuring them of the Commission’s continued backing as they prepare to compete against the world’s best.
“This tournament should serve as a springboard for the World Championship in Germany. The National Sports Commission remains committed to supporting the team as they continue their preparations for the next challenge,” he added.
Flag football has experienced rapid growth in Nigeria in recent years, with the country’s national teams consistently producing impressive performances on the continental stage.
Following their latest triumph in Kenya, Team Nigeria will now shift its focus to the IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Germany, where they will aim to translate their African dominance into success on the global stage.
