With just seven days remaining until the 2026 Commonwealth Games get underway in Glasgow, Scotland, Team Nigeria is entering the final phase of preparations, buoyed by renewed confidence and strong backing from the Federal Government.
The 23rd Commonwealth Games will run from 23 July to 2 August 2026, bringing together thousands of athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in one of the world’s biggest multi-sport events.

Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, on Thursday addressed Team Nigeria athletes at their high-performance training camp in Aberdeen, where they are concluding their final overseas training programme before travelling to the Games Village in Glasgow.
Olopade reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the team’s success, describing the training camp as one of the most comprehensive and professionally organised preparation programmes ever provided for Nigerian athletes.
“The Federal Government has given you the platform to succeed through world-class preparation. Now is the time to repay that confidence with discipline, commitment and performances that will make the nation proud,” Olopade told the athletes.
The NSC Director General urged the athletes to remain patriotic, focused and scandal-free throughout the competition, reminding them that they are ambassadors of Nigeria both on and off the field of play.
He also disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is looking forward to welcoming Team Nigeria after the Games, expressing confidence that the athletes will return with performances worthy of national celebration.
Team Nigeria will depart Aberdeen for Glasgow in the coming days, where they will compete across several sporting disciplines in pursuit of medals and another memorable outing for the country at the Commonwealth Games, which officially begin on 23 July and conclude on 2 August 2026.
