Man Utd eye Hugo Larsson
Manchester United and Newcastle have both held talks with representatives of Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson as the race for the gifted young midfielder picks up pace, FootballTransfers have been told.
Sources close to the player have revealed to FootballTransfers that initial contact has been made by both Premier League clubs as they assess a potential move for the 22-year-old Sweden international, who is open to a move away from the Bundesliga side.
Neither of the Premier League clubs have yet made an official bid for Larsson, who has developed into one of the standout midfielders in Germany since his €9 million move from Malmo in 2023.
Any deal will have to be agreed through Frankfurt, who are in a strong negotiating position given their player remains under contract until 2029 and, as such, the Germans are holding out for a transfer fee in the region of €50 million – a sizeable chunk above the box-to-box star’s €27.6m Estimated Transfer Value (ETV).
While talks have been held with Larsson’s representatives, neither of the Premier League sides has taken the step of making an official offer for him.
Manu Kone latest
Fabrizo Romano has given an update on Manchester United’s pursuit of Manu Kone, with conversations already held over the Roma midfielder.
“The reality is that Manchester United are looking for a defensive midfielder and Manu Kone is one of the names on their shortlist,” Romano said. “They have already had a phone conversation with the player’s agents and the relationship between the agents and Manchester United is excellent.
“As of today, Roma have not received any formal approach. Manchester United have not sent a bid and have not made contact with the club.
“I’ve seen reports saying Manu Kone would cost €80m or €90m. That’s not true. He is expensive, but he will cost less than that.
“United have taken information and now they want to take a little time before deciding who will be their next midfield signing.”
Romano gives Summerville update
Romano also clarified Manchester United’s position on Crysencio Summerville, with interest in the West Ham star contingent on Marcus Rashford’s future.
“Everything depends on Marcus Rashford,” Romano said. “While Rashford is still at the club, it would be difficult for Manchester United to add another player in that position.
“United spoke with Summerville’s agents back in June, but they have never made an official approach to West Ham and they have never submitted a bid. There are no negotiations and there are no ongoing contacts.
“Summerville is one of the options if Rashford leaves, but at the moment there is nothing concrete, nothing close and nothing advanced.”
Truth over Greenwood fee
Manchester United made more than €12 million as Mason Greenwood completed a move from Marseille to Fenerbahce, but the Red Devils might have hoped for more from a man who was once considered to be one of the biggest talents in world football.
Marseille sporting director Gregory Lorenzi has been forced to explain why the club failed to get a higher price for the player – and why United therefore missed out on a far higher sell-on fee.
“We’re bound by economic constraints. Clubs didn’t come knocking on our door to buy Mason Greenwood. The market valued the player below €80 or 100 million,” he said in quotes relayed by L’Equipe before offering a further defence.
“Given what was planned for this deal, the club is meeting its expectations. The player was popular with the fans. But we didn’t want to keep a player who didn’t want to continue wearing the OM jersey.
“We know the complexity of the Greenwood case, what the image of the player is. We can’t think there would be too many opportunities to sell him. There were discussions that had been initiated to try to find a compromise with the player who wanted to leave, because we also need to make that clear.”
