Reigning Commonwealth Games champion Lawal Rafiat Folashade (MON) has set her sights on another golden performance, declaring that she is determined to build on her remarkable achievements when she competes at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Nigerian weightlifting star, who won gold in the women’s 59kg event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, believes she is in even better shape as she prepares to defend her title against some of the world’s best lifters.

Speaking ahead of the Games, Rafiat expressed gratitude for her journey so far while insisting she remains hungry for more success.
“I thank God for how far He has brought me. Winning gold at the last Commonwealth Games was a special moment, but I’m working hard because I believe I can achieve even more,” she said.
The multiple-time international medallist has been one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers in weightlifting, helping the country maintain its reputation as one of Africa’s leading nations in the sport.
Rafiat credited her preparations and the support she has received from the National Sports Commission (NSC) for boosting her confidence ahead of the competition.
“Every competition is a new challenge, and my focus is to keep improving and give my best whenever I step onto the platform,” she added.
Weightlifting remains one of Team Nigeria’s strongest medal prospects at major international competitions, with the country enjoying sustained success at both the Commonwealth Games and African Championships.
Rafiat will be among the athletes expected to lead Nigeria’s medal challenge when the weightlifting events get underway at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, as Team Nigeria looks to build on its impressive performance at the previous edition in Birmingham.
