A 16-year-old girl was repeatedly raped by her biological brother, 38, as it reminder him of “his late wife”. Police in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh confirmed the man had been jailed after the accusations came to light. A report was filed 18 months ago and the victim is said to have recorded video evidence of the assaults and subsequently presented this to her family.
Authorities confirmed the man was arrested on Wednesday after the victim’s sister‑in‑law filed a formal complaint. A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Inspector Shamsher Bahadur, in charge of Thariyaon Police Station, said: “A 16‑year‑old sister has accused her 38‑year‑old biological brother of rape.
“Video evidence has also been provided. Medical examination has confirmed the rape. A case has been registered under the POCSO Act and other sections, and the accused has been sent to jail.”
The 38-year-old, a labourer, had previously been jailed for killing his wife, allegedly for her refusal to take drugs. He was released in June 2024 and returned to his home in a village just 28km away from the district headquarters. The man has, according to police officials, confessed to assaulting his younger sister.
The man claimed he did so because he “saw his deceased wife” in his younger sister. Despite repeated pleas from the victim to her family, her complaints were initially ignored. It was only after she recorded the abuse with the help of friends and presented the footage that relatives realised the extent of the crime.
The victim currently lives with her mother, middle brother, and sister-in-law. Police say medical examinations of the victim confirmed sexual assault and that further evidence is currently being collected.
The 38-year-old appeared in court on Thursday afternoon and was then remanded and will be held in jail until a court date is set.
