Former Nigeria international Gbenga Okunowo has welcomed the Nigeria Football Federation’s decision to extend Eric Chelle’s contract as Super Eagles head coach, urging the football authorities to provide the Franco-Malian with the support needed to succeed.
Okunowo said Chelle has made encouraging progress since taking charge of the national team, noting that the Super Eagles have begun to rediscover an attractive style of play.

“Eric Chelle must receive full support. The progress is visible, but the coach needs the right environment to continue building the team,” Okunowo said.
The former defender warned that financial and logistical challenges could undermine the team’s development if they are not properly addressed by the football authorities.
According to him, sustained backing for the technical crew is essential if Nigeria is to remain competitive on the continental and global stage.
“Nigeria has an abundance of talented players, but success also depends on giving the coaching staff the resources and stability they need to do their job effectively,” he added.
Okunowo expressed confidence that, with proper planning and institutional support, the Super Eagles can continue improving under Chelle and reclaim their place among Africa’s leading football nations.
He urged the NFF to remain committed to its long-term project, insisting that continuity and strong administrative backing are vital to achieving sustained success.
