Former Super Eagles captain and coach Sunday Oliseh has defended FIFA’s decision to increase Africa’s representation at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the continent’s additional qualification places are justified.

Oliseh dismissed suggestions that countries such as Cape Verde and other emerging football nations do not deserve to compete at the global showpiece, arguing that the expansion reflects fairness rather than preferential treatment.
“Africa deserves more World Cup places. This is about fair representation, not doing anyone a favour,” Oliseh said.
The former midfielder pointed to Africa’s population of over one billion people, noting that the continent’s allocation of 10 places remains proportionate when compared with Europe’s 16 qualification spots despite having a significantly smaller population.
According to Oliseh, the expanded format offers more African nations the opportunity to develop through exposure to elite international competition.
“When you consider global demographics, the increase in Africa’s allocation is fully justified. More countries deserve the opportunity to compete on the biggest stage,” he added.

Oliseh also praised the performances of several African teams at the ongoing tournament, saying they have demonstrated that the continent has the quality to compete with the world’s best.
He urged critics to embrace the expanded World Cup, insisting that broader participation will accelerate the growth of football across Africa and strengthen the global game.
