Nigerian basketball prospect Ugonna Onyenso has described his selection in the NBA Draft as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream, following an inspiring journey from Africa to the biggest basketball stage in the world.
The Owerri-born center was selected with the 53rd overall pick before his draft rights were moved in a series of trades, becoming one of the latest Nigerian talents to earn a place on the NBA pathway.

“This is proof that dreams come true. It’s a very special moment for me and my family,” Onyenso said.
The former University of Virginia standout admitted he was surprised when he received the call but said the moment was one he would cherish forever.
According to Onyenso, growing up in Africa, where basketball is not always the first choice of sport, makes the achievement even more meaningful.
“I never imagined this moment would come so quickly. Coming from Africa makes it even more special because it shows what’s possible,” he added.
Onyenso also paid tribute to the NBA Academy Africa, crediting the programme with helping him develop both as a player and as a person.
He revealed that the mental resilience he built during his time at the academy, particularly throughout the COVID-19 period, played a major role in shaping his career.
“The NBA Academy Africa prepared me for moments like this. It taught me discipline, mental toughness and how to keep believing even during difficult times,” he stated.
The Nigerian center now joins the growing list of NBA players with Nigerian roots and will be aiming to establish himself at the highest level of world basketball after taking another significant step in his remarkable journey.
