Football transfers specialist Fabrizio Romano has provided updates on several major stories, including the latest on Manuel Ugarte, Mateus Fernandes, Aurelien Tchouameni and Viktor Gyokeres.
Ugarte set for Man Utd stay after sustaining injury
Manchester United have suffered a blow to their hopes of selling Manuel Ugarte after the midfielder was stretched off in Uruguay’s World Cup loss against Spain, according to Romano.
The 25-year-old appears to have sustained a serious knee injury after pulling up when trying to win possession back from Spain’s Pedri on Friday evening.
Romano claims Ugarte, who has struggled at United since joining them from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, had been earmarked as a player who could be allowed to leave this summer.
“We send all the best wishes to Manuel Ugarte with obviously Manchester United waiting to get in touch with the player, with Uruguay staff, [with the] fear that it could be a serious injury for Ugarte,” Romano said in a new YouTube video.
“And obviously [the injury] could impact his future as well. Ugarte was one of the players considered on the market by Manchester United this summer, available for sale. And so with Ugarte leaving, Man United were considering to sign again one more midfielder. [But] now we have to see what is going to happen.”
Man Utd told Fernandes will go to highest bidder
West Ham United will sell Mateus Fernandes to the highest bidder this summer, according to Romano, with Tottenham Hotspur and Man Utd both keen to sign the midfielder.
Fernandes was a shining light in an otherwise difficult season for the Hammers, who were relegated to the Championship for the first time since 2011 last season.
Romano understands Man Utd remain interested in the 21-year-old, despite the Daily Mirror claiming the club view his €92million (£80m) asking price as problematic.
“Manchester United remain in contact with West Ham,” said Romano. “Manchester United are still working on the Mateus Fernandes deal. West Ham have been clear with the agent of the player: the player will be sold to the best offer, to the club offering the most money.
“And so whoever offers one penny more is getting the player from West Ham. And Mateus Fernandes has opened doors to both Tottenham and Man United.
“And so [it] now depends on West Ham. If West Ham accept Man United’s bid, he goes to United. If Tottenham win the race, he goes to Spurs. And so the story is open and from what I’m told, Man United are yet to give up on Mateus Fernandes.”
Real yet to put Tchouameni up for sale
Real Madrid have given no indication that Aurelien Tchouameni is available this summer, according to Romano, amid speculation linking him with Man United.
BBC Sport understands the Red Devils have monitored the France international, who is widely regarded as one of the world’s best midfielders, as they look to strengthen in the middle of the park.
However, while Romano confirms United are admirers of Tchouameni, the Italian insists La Liga giants Real are yet to put the 26-year-old up for sale.
“My understanding at the moment is that Real Madrid are yet to open doors for Tchouameni,” said Romano.
“I already told you that, at some point in this window, in July or in August, if Real Madrid tell Tchouameni ‘okay, you can go’, in that case Manchester United are among the clubs that are interested. Let’s see if more clubs join the race, but for sure there will be a lot of interest in Tchouameni [if Real’s stance changes].”
Arsenal not planning to offload Gyokeres
Arsenal are not planning to offload Viktor Gyokeres despite strong interest from Atletico Madrid, according to Romano.
BBC Sport reported in April that the Gunners are sweet on Atletico forward Julian Alvarez but they would need to sell either Gyokeres or Kai Havertz in order to fund a deal.
However, Romano understands that while La Liga side Atletico have contacted Arsenal to check on Gyokeres’ availability, they have been told the Sweden international is not for sale.
“I can tell you that Atletico Madrid are not the only club trying to understand the situation of Viktor Gyokeres,” Romano said in a different YouTube video.
“There have been already important, top clubs asking about the availability of Viktor Gyokeres for this summer transfer window, already in May and the beginning of June.
“But the answer from Arsenal was always ‘we want to keep the player, we believe in the player, Viktor Gyokeres is part of our project’. So Arsenal were not opening the doors to an exit.
“Then obviously if something big comes to the table, we will see later this summer. But at the moment the answer received by all the top clubs, asking about Viktor Gyokeres, has always been the same.”
