Lucas Bergvall was bombarded with questions about his future at Tottenham Hotspur following Sweden’s clash against Japan at the World Cup.
Lucas Bergvall refused to commit his future to Tottenham Hotspur following Sweden’s draw to Japan. The 20-year-old midfielder, who could leave the Lilywhites this summer, helped Graham Potter’s side come from behind at the Dallas Stadium on Thursday night as they salvaged a point to secure a place in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
During an interview with Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen after the game, Bergvall was asked whether he plans to leave Spurs. Keeping his cards close to his chest, he claimed a decision would be made after the tournament.
“Right now, I’m just trying to focus on the World Cup,” said Bergvall, whom Tottenham signed from Djurgarden for about £8.5million in February 2024. “Whatever happens after that, I’ll deal with it then. I’m fully focused on the World Cup.”
Earlier this week, The Athletic reported that the Swede had recently informed Spurs officials of his desire to seek a new challenge elsewhere. The report claimed that Bergvall has attracted ‘strong interest’ from clubs in England, including Nottingham Forest, and across Europe.

When quizzed on the question marks over his future, Bergvall doubled down and said: “As I said: I’m fully focused on the World Cup.”
On whether his agent has been in contact with Tottenham, he refused to back down. Bergvall replied: “I’m fully focusing on the World Cup. I’m here with Sweden, and we’re going to try to make a good impression in the U.S. Whatever happens after that, we’ll deal with it then.”
Bergvall was singing from the same hymn sheet at the start of the month. In a separate interview with Fotbollskanalen ahead of Sweden’s opening clash of the World Cup against Tunisia, he said: “It’s not something I’m focusing on right now.
“It’s been a tough season, as I said. But now the focus is on the World Cup and being here.”
Bergvall only featured five times for Roberto De Zerbi last season, with his only start coming against Sunderland. The Swede was reduced to minutes off the bench in each of the next four Premier League games before being an unused substitute in the final two matches of the campaign.
When asked why he fell out of favour under the Italian, Bergvall said: “I trust that he will field the best team to win the matches. I’m glad we made it. It’s been a tough season for me and the team, with injuries and so on.
“It’s nice to turn the page and focus on the World Cup,” he added. “He’s done well. He’s one of the reasons we’re still in the league. It’s clear that he’ll stay. It was only a few games [on the sidelines].”
