Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has revealed that Nigeria has begun implementing a long-term football strategy centred around Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle as preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup gather momentum.

Dikko confirmed that Chelle has been rewarded with improved contract terms and better remuneration, while his backroom staff will also benefit from enhanced welfare packages.
“We’re building for 2030,” Dikko said.
The NSC chairman disclosed that, beyond leading the Super Eagles, Chelle will now take charge of Nigeria’s U-23 national team in a move designed to create a seamless pathway from youth football to the senior national team.
According to Dikko, additional members of the technical crew will be appointed whenever fixtures involving both teams overlap, ensuring neither side is affected.
“Eric Chelle will oversee both the Super Eagles and the U-23 team, with extra technical personnel available whenever necessary,” he added.
Dikko explained that the decision is aimed at establishing a unified football philosophy across Nigeria’s national teams, allowing young talents to adapt to the same tactical identity before graduating to the senior side.
“We want one football philosophy running from the U-23s to the Super Eagles,” he stated.
The sports administrator believes the new structure will improve player development, strengthen continuity within the national teams and make the transition for emerging talents much smoother.
He added that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for honours at major tournaments, including the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
