Fox Sports broadcaster John Strong gave a cheeky callback to the American Revolution during the England-Ghana match that has set the internet alight.
Strong, who is the No. 1 play-by-play commentator for the World Cup rights holder, was in Foxborough, Massachusetts for the second match in Group L.
Within a few seconds of kickoff, Strong decided to invoke the old bad blood between the USA and England.
‘Ghana have never beaten England,’ Strong said after recalling the Black Stars’ opening victory in the group stage.
‘It would be a huge shock, but as we know, the English historically struggle here in Massachusetts.’
Strong’s comment seems only to be a reference to the Revolutionary War, which began in Massachusetts.

Despite the scoreless draw, England still is in pole position to win Group L
Two of the most influential events leading to the war – the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party – occurred in the state’s largest city. The first two battles of the war also took place in Massachusetts at Lexington and Concord.
A majority of the comments were laughing in favor of Strong’s commentary – with some calling it a ‘banger’.
Others, perhaps inspired by Strong’s words, posted similar comments after England and Ghana finished with a 0-0 draw.
‘England having a hard time of it in Massachusetts once again,’ read one post on X.
A post from Boston Sports Journal founder Greg Bedard read, ‘Heavily favored, confident England bogged down in an unexpected slog in Massachusetts. Sounds familiar.’
Despite the result, England will still be in pole position to win Group L going into their final group stage match against Panama.
