Former Super Eagles defender Chikelue Iloenyosi believes history could be about to repeat itself, backing the Super Eagles to lift the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after following a path strikingly similar to one of Nigeria’s greatest football generations.
Popularly known as ‘The General’, Iloenyosi said the current squad has everything required to become African champions once again under head coach Eric Chelle.

“I believe this team can win the next AFCON,” Iloenyosi said.
His confidence is fuelled not only by the quality within the current squad but also by a remarkable piece of Nigerian football history.
The legendary Super Eagles side coached by Clemens Westerhof finished runners-up at the 1990 AFCON in Algeria, claimed the bronze medal at the 1992 tournament in Senegal, before conquering Africa by winning the 1994 title in Tunisia.
More than three decades later, the present generation appears to be tracing the same route.
Nigeria finished as runners-up at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, secured the bronze medal at the 2025 tournament in Morocco, and will head to the 2027 AFCON, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, hoping to complete what many fans see as history repeating itself.
Iloenyosi praised the commitment of the current technical crew, insisting their willingness to make sacrifices has created the right environment for success.
“The coaches are committed and ready to make sacrifices for the success of the team,” he added.
The former defender also pointed to the depth of talent available to the Super Eagles but warned that ability alone will not be enough.
“We have the players to win major honours, but discipline and consistent performances will be the key,” he stated.
With the memories of Nigeria’s famous 1994 triumph still cherished by supporters, The General believes the current Super Eagles now have an opportunity to write their own chapter in history by completing another silver-bronze-gold journey at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
