Nigerian quarter-miler Samuel Ogazi has insisted he remains grounded despite rewriting the history books after breaking Nigeria’s long-standing 400m record.

Ogazi eclipsed the mark previously held by Nigerian athletics legend Innocent Egbunike, but says the achievement has only increased his sense of responsibility.
“Breaking the record comes with more responsibility,” Ogazi said.
The young sprinter revealed that Egbunike personally encouraged him before his record-breaking performance, a gesture he described as both inspiring and humbling.
“He prayed for me and encouraged me before I achieved it,” he added.
Ogazi believes the former national record holder would be proud to see another Nigerian athlete raise the standard in the event.
Despite receiving widespread praise following his historic run, the Commonwealth Games hopeful insists he has no intention of changing his approach.
According to him, staying disciplined and avoiding distractions will be crucial as he continues his development.
“I don’t pay attention to the hype or the criticism,” he stated.
The 400m star explained that his focus remains on recovery, consistency and improving with every race rather than getting carried away by recent success.
Ogazi has quickly emerged as one of Nigeria’s brightest athletics prospects, with growing expectations ahead of major international competitions.
The youngster is targeting strong performances at the Commonwealth Games and World Championships as he continues his rise on the global stage.
