Former Super Eagles midfielder and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner Gabriel Reuben has warned the Super Eagles against taking any opponent lightly ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Reuben believes Nigeria cannot afford to repeat the mistakes that cost the country a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting every point will be crucial during the qualification campaign.
“We must treat every game with the seriousness it deserves,” Reuben said.
The former Kano Pillars midfielder stressed that preparation must begin long before the opening fixture, urging the technical crew and players to leave nothing to chance.
According to him, the Super Eagles must be physically, mentally and tactically ready for every opponent.
“Our preparation has to be top-notch,” he added.
Reuben warned that countries across Africa are becoming increasingly motivated whenever they face Nigeria, making every qualifier a difficult contest regardless of the opposition.
He insisted the Super Eagles cannot afford to surrender cheap points if they hope to qualify comfortably.
“Every team wants to beat Nigeria, so we have to match that hunger and determination,” he stated.
The former international believes the current squad possesses enough quality to secure qualification but stressed that talent alone will not be enough without the right attitude.
Nigeria will begin its AFCON qualifying campaign in September as head coach Eric Chelle looks to guide the three-time African champions back to the continental tournament.
Reuben maintained that consistency and professionalism throughout the qualifiers will be key to ensuring the Super Eagles return to the Africa Cup of Nations without unnecessary drama.
