Former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins has thrown his full support behind Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, insisting the Franco-Malian remains the right man to lead Nigeria despite the country’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As debate continues over the future of the national team following another painful World Cup disappointment, Martins believes changing coaches would only disrupt the rebuilding process.
“I don’t see any problem with Eric Chelle remaining as coach,” Martins said.
The former Inter Milan and Newcastle United striker expressed confidence in the direction the Super Eagles are heading under the current manager.
According to Martins, Chelle has introduced a clear philosophy that the players must continue to embrace if Nigeria is to return to the top of African football.
“The players need to keep buying into his ideas,” he added.
Martins believes continuity will give the coach enough time to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for major honours in the coming years.
He urged Nigerians to remain patient with the rebuilding process, stressing that success cannot be achieved overnight.
“We have to keep building for the future,” he stated.
Chelle has overseen a transition within the Super Eagles since taking charge, handing opportunities to several new players while implementing his tactical approach.
Despite the disappointment of missing the World Cup, Martins remains convinced the former Mali coach can guide Nigeria back to success if given the necessary time and support.
