A SWAT team and a huge number of armed police responded to an alleged incident approximately a mile from where England is to kick off their World Cup campaign in two days’ time. Dozens of Arlington Police vehicles could be seen stationed on West Division Street in the Texas city on Monday, a short drive from the AT&T Stadium where the Three Lions take on Croatia on Wednesday.
An officer at the scene described the alleged incident as “pretty serious”. Police snipers, an armoured BearCat vehicle and police drones were used at the scene, with a huge number of officers sent to the area. Dozens of police vehicles were seen lining West Division Street.
A spokeswoman for the Arlington Police Department said the force were responding to a domestic dispute between a male and female at their home address. She added: “The female resident was barricaded inside the home with additional occupants.
“The report shows that a weapon was produced but no injuries were reported. The suspect is now in custody and the investigation is ongoing.” There is no indication the incident was connected to the World Cup or posed any threat to the tournament or its venues.
Thomas Tuchel’s men are counting down the days until Wednesday’s Group L opener against Croatia, the side that broke the nation’s heart in the 2018 semi-finals. The game that will start England’s World Cup will be played at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
The stadium is udaly home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys in Texas. So far, England have played two friendlies in Florida against New Zealand and Costa Rica. The 80,000 capacity stadium will also host the game between Argentina and Austria, on 22 June, Japan v Sweden on 25 June, and Jordan v Argentina on June 27.
The Football Association is hoping Tuchel is the man to help England get over the line in a major tournament, having lost the last two European Championship finals under Sir Gareth Southgate.
