Nigerian sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi delivered a breathtaking performance to win the men’s 100 metres title at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, cementing his place among the fastest sprinters in the world.
Representing Auburn, the junior blazed to an incredible 9.72 seconds to claim gold in Eugene. Although the performance was aided by a +2.2 m/s tailwind, just above the legal limit, it remains one of the fastest times ever recorded by an African athlete under any conditions, Sports247 reports.
Had the wind been within the allowable limit, the race would have placed Ajayi firmly in contention for a new African record.
Nevertheless, the Nigerian leaves Oregon as the NCAA Men’s 100m Champion, a title that confirms his rapid rise among the global sprinting elite.
From the start, Ajayi looked in complete control. Exploding from the blocks and accelerating smoothly through the middle phase of the race, he separated himself from a talented field before powering through the finish line in dominant fashion.
Cayman Islands sprinter Jaiden Reid secured the silver medal in a season’s best 9.82 seconds, while American athlete Jelani Watkins claimed bronze with 9.87 seconds.
Ghana’s Mustapha Bokpin also impressed, dipping under the 10-second barrier to finish sixth in 9.99 seconds.
The final, however, brought disappointment for fellow Nigerian Israel Okon, who appeared to sustain an injury during the race.
The sprinter was visibly holding his leg before crossing the finish line and ultimately finished ninth.
For Ajayi, though, the spotlight belonged entirely to him. His NCAA title adds another major achievement to an already impressive season and reinforces the belief that he can compete with the very best sprinters on the international stage.
At a time when Nigerian sprinting is enjoying a resurgence, Ajayi’s latest performance serves as another reminder of the country’s growing strength in the short sprints.
The NCAA champion has arrived—and judging by his trajectory, this could be only the beginning for Kanyinsola Ajayi.
