Nigerian thrower Jessica Oji capped an impressive freshman campaign with a fourth-place finish in the women’s shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, earning First Team All-American honors in the process.
Competing against some of the finest collegiate throwers in the world, Oji produced a best mark of 17.98 metres, narrowly missing out on a place on the podium in a fiercely contested final.
The Penn State freshman demonstrated composure and consistency throughout the competition, remaining in contention among the leading throwers and reinforcing her reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest emerging talents in the field events.
The title was won by Swedish athlete Axelina Johansson, who delivered a championship-winning throw of 19.92 metres, setting a new meet record in the process.
South Africa’s Ashley Erasmus secured the silver medal with a best effort of 18.14 metres, while Dutch thrower Alida van Daalen claimed bronze with 18.12 metres.
Oji was less than 20 centimetres away from a podium finish, highlighting just how competitive the contest proved to be.
Also representing Africa in the final, Liberian athlete Anthonett Nabwe finished ninth overall with a best throw of 17.40 metres.
Although she narrowly missed the medals, Oji’s performance ranks among the standout achievements of her debut NCAA season.
Finishing fourth at the national championships as a freshman and securing First Team All-American status is a significant accomplishment and underscores her immense potential.
The result also adds to a growing list of impressive performances by Nigerian athletes on the collegiate circuit this year, further demonstrating the country’s rising influence across multiple disciplines in track and field.
For Oji, this may be only the beginning. With valuable championship experience now under her belt and several years of collegiate competition still ahead, the future looks exceptionally bright for the talented Nigerian thrower.
