A mother and her 15-year-old daughter were allegedly gang raped by a group of armed burglars. Police said between eight and 10 men broke into their home before stealing valuables and raping the pair.
The reported attack took place during the early hours of Thursday morning (June 11). The gang are said to have broken through a window to gain access to the home before they looted jewellery and cash. They then raped both the mother and her teenage daughter before fleeing the scene. It’s reported that the woman’s husband was away for work at the time, while a second child, aged five, was present during the attack.
As reported by The Daily Star, the gang broke into the home, located in the Dolnighona area of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, at around 2.30am on Thursday morning (9.30pm on Wednesday in the UK). Both victims were rushed to hospital after the attack, with the teenager remaining in a critical condition.
Local reports have confirmed six men have been arrested. They include Rezaul Karim, 36; brothers Tofazzal Hossain, 23, and Kefayat Hossain, 27; Mohammad Tanzid, 24; Mehedi Hasan, 24; and Mohammad Tareq, 26.
It’s reported that one of the suspects, who is identified as Jisan and yet to be arrested, was released from jail just five days before the attack. He was being detained on weapons and robbery charges.
Abhijit Das, assistant superintendent of police for the Chakaria Circle, confirmed an organised local criminal network was responsible for the alleged burglary and rapes. The force is continuing to investigate what happened and search for the remaining suspects.
Meanwhile, the family of the victims have claimed the same group targeted their household on two or three previous occasions. They added that the woman’s husband was in Chattogram for work at the time of the break-in.
