football.london’s writers debate whether Chelsea should keep or sell Marc Cucurella this summer
Marc Cucurella continues to be linked with an exit from Chelsea this summer, with a number of clubs tracking the Spaniard ahead of the transfer window opening.
The left-back joined the Blues from Brighton for £60million in the summer of 2022 and has since become one of the best defenders in the Premier League. Following the sackings of Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, though, Cucurella is now open to leaving Stamford Bridge, according to sources.
Chelsea are not actively looking to sell the Spain international, though will be willing to part ways with the left-back should the right offer arrive in their direction. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are believed to be interested in the player.

I think Cucurella is an excellent player; someone who has really improved in the last couple of seasons. The Spaniard has established himself as one of the best in his position in Europe. So, surely that means Chelsea shouldn’t sell him, but I can’t shake this feeling that now is the best time to let go.
With three years remaining on his Chelsea contract, he is entering a crucial period at Stamford Bridge and one where the club should really be starting to think, ‘what’s next?’. We know Chelsea are open to letting the Spain international depart should they receive the right offer – and I do agree with that.
Jorrel Hato had an excellent second half of the season as well, so it’s not like Chelsea don’t have an adequate replacement. However, if Cucurella does leave, depending on where Xabi Alonso sees Valentin Barco’s best position, the club should be targeting another left-back.

Sam Truelove
This is a tricky decision. Marc Cucurella is a great defender and probably one of the best left-sided defenders in the league. After a rocky first year in west London, he’s often now one of the first names on the teamsheet.
So, I actually wouldn’t look to actively sell the Spaniard. A back four of Cucurella, Levi Colwill, a new centre-half and Reece James looks extremely solid on paper. Other full-backs such as Malo Gusto I would move on, but not Cucurella.
Saying that, if a club makes a bid of say £60million to £70million, it would be extremely hard to turn down. But I would look to try and keep the former Getafe man where possible.

Kieran Horn
Considering what he has said about Chelsea, the system Xabi Alonso will likely deploy and the fact his replacement is arguably already at the club, I think it is the right time to sell Cucurella.
With his performances dipping this season after a stellar 2024/25 campaign under Enzo Maresca, the Blues should really look to cut their losses and are likely in a position to recoup the majority of what they spent in 2022.
It is also unclear how he will fit Alonso’s back five system while Jorrel Hato has the versatility to play in several positions at the back. Cucurella has proven he can contribute going forward but that was in a much more freer role and thus he would unlikely have that much success at wing-back.
If a £50million offer is on the table, I would take it and look to invest in a centre-back.
