Manchester United have confirmed their first transfer of the summer in a move that will have significant implications for the rest of the window under Michael Carrick.
United are looking to make major improvements to their squad, particularly in midfield after agreeing to sign Ederson from Atalanta for €35 million.
The scope of United’s business will largely come down to how much money they can raise through sales or other budget boosts such as sell-on clauses for players like Mason Greenwood.
And the Red Devils have announced their first major sale of the summer by confirming the permanent departure of Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli following his loan spell with the Italian side.
Napoli paid €6m to take Hojlund on loan last summer with an obligation to make the deal permanent if they qualified for the Champions League, which they achieved by finishing as runners up in Serie A.
United will now receive a further €44m for Hojlund in a substantial deal that could unlock further signings for Carrick’s side this summer.
Hojlund secures Napoli move after disappointing Man Utd stint
Hojlund joined United in 2023 for €80m but, despite scoring ten times in his debut season, the 23-year-old struggled to adapt to Premier League football and only netted four times the following year.
With the signing of Benjamin Sesko last summer, Hojlund was deemed surplus to requirements and Napoli eventually took the Danish international on loan on deadline day.
Hojlund went on to score 12 goals in Serie A for Napoli and is understood to have penned a contract until 2030, which contains an €85m release clause that is valid from next summer.
United will now hope they can secure similar exits for the likes of Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana, both of whom are likely to return to Old Trafford for pre-season after loan spells at Barcelona and Trabzonspor respectively.
