Officials, coaches and players of Nigeria’s national scrabble team have turned their attention towards a couple of continental and global championships, which will both come up later this year in Nairobi, Kenya, Sports247 reports.

This announcement was provided in the wake of the contingent’s recent remarkable performance at the 2026 Causeway Scrabble Challenge, which took place in Bangkok, Thailand from Friday to Monday.
Officials pointed out that the Nigerian scrabble team’s latest top performance in Bangkok further reinforces the country’s position as both Africa’s and the world’s foremost nation in the brainstorming sport of wordsmiths.
With the Bangkok event now in the past, attention is turning to the African Scrabble Championship and World Youth Scrabble Championships in Kenya this September, where the team will again hope to excel.
While pointing out that the scrabble federation is also keeping tabs on discovery of talents and youth development in the sport, officials disclosed that the team is also staying focused on defending its continental and global titles.
A press release disclosed that the scrabble federation is lining up more discovery programmes and initiatives in schools that will help it achieve efforts to continue inspiring a new generation of champions for the sport.
“In line with efforts to deepen grassroots development and secure the future of the sport, Nigeria also fielded young players in the junior category as part of the international exposure programme under the pilot Scrabble-to-Schools Initiative.
“Despite facing visa-related challenges which affected preparations and saw members of the team proceed almost directly into competition upon arrival, the athletes displayed exceptional resilience and determination.
“Having lost valuable preparation time and missed opportunities to settle into the tournament environment, Team Nigeria fought back admirably to secure podium finishes and maintain the country’s reputation as a global scrabble powerhouse.
“Nigeria entered the tournament as the reigning World Scrabble Champion nation following its historic triumph at the World Scrabble Championships in Accra last year,” the press release stated in part.
