The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has fixed dates for the commencement of activities at this year’s national track and field trials, ahead of which regulations guiding registration of athletes have been released, Sports247 reports.

The trials are scheduled to run for three days from Saturday, 20th June to Monday, 22nd at Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) Sports Complex, where athletes will be selected to represent Nigeria at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
These details are contained in a press statement signed by AFN’s media coordinator, Dr. Kola Oredipe, who added that the trials will feature 32 events for men and women, whose arrival date is Friday, 19th of June and departure is Tuesday, 23rd.
Oredipe added that the AFN’s technical committee, led by ex-international athlete, Gabriel Okon, has also released qualifying standards for both home-based athletes and those coming in from overseas.
He added, “While athletes for 100m, 200m and 400m men and women would be eligible to participate based on the set standards, other track and field events will remain open for participation.
“Secretary-general of the AFN, Mr. Israel Inwang, has issued letters of invitation to state directors of sports, chairmen of state athletics associations, coaches, managers, military, para-military athletics bodies and clubs for participation.
“The Federation will provide accommodation for athletes who made the standard within the year under review, with names of qualified athletes expected to be published soon.
“President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Chief Tonobok Okowa, is inviting stakeholders and athletics fans across the country to prepare to be part of the national trials.
The AFN boss is appreciating leadership of the National Sports Commission, for the support to the federation and the athletes over this period.”
