Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche has etched his name into European football history after becoming the first Nigerian player to win the UEFA Conference League with Crystal Palace despite enduring a difficult and frustrating spell at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace secured a historic 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano in the UEFA Conference League final, handing the club their first-ever European title.
While Uche was absent from the final squad, the Nigerian still qualified for a winners’ medal because of his key contributions earlier in the campaign.
The 22-year-old arrived in London with huge expectations after joining Palace on loan from Getafe CF, but his dream move quickly turned complicated.
Despite showing flashes of brilliance in Europe, Uche struggled to break into the first team consistently under manager Oliver Glasner.
Limited Premier League minutes reportedly left the midfielder frustrated, with tensions eventually developing between player and manager.
The situation worsened in February when Palace removed Uche from their UEFA Conference League knockout squad following the return of injured attacking players.
However, before his omission, Uche had already made a massive impact in the competition.
He featured in four Conference League matches, scoring two crucial goals and providing one assist during the league phase.
His memorable European journey began with a goal on debut against Shelbourne before producing a stunning long-range strike against KuPS Kuopio, a goal many Palace fans still regard as one of the club’s best in Europe this season.
Although his Crystal Palace dream never fully materialised, Uche’s early contributions proved decisive in helping the Eagles reach the knockout stages.
Under UEFA regulations, players who feature during a successful European campaign remain eligible for winners’ medals even if they are later removed from the squad.
The triumph also carries historic significance for Nigerian football.
Uche’s medal means Nigerian players have now won every major UEFA club competition, including the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League and UEFA Super Cup.
For Uche, the season may have ended in disappointment personally, but history will forever remember him as the first Nigerian to conquer the UEFA Conference League.
