Arsenal handed Julian Alvarez transfer boost as Barcelona ‘agree terms’ with new target

Julian Alvarez is expected to leave Atletico Madrid this summer and Arsenal are one of the frontrunners to secure his signature after winning the league

Arsenal’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has received a major boost after Barcelona switched their attention to Anthony Gordon. The La Liga side have offered Newcastle United in the region of £70million for Gordon as they attempt to beat Bayern Munich to his signature.

It is being reported that Barca and the Magpies are engaged in advanced talks after Barca formally registered their interest in the England international. Bundesliga champions Bayern had already thrown their hat into the ring as they attempted to lure the 25-year-old frontman to Germany.

But it now appears that the former Everton man looks set to move to the Spotify Camp Nou with terms between player and club having already been agreed.

And that could be good news for the Gunners, who continue to be linked with a move Alvarez. The forward is expected to leave Atletico Madrid this summer and Arsenal are one of the frontrunners to secure his signature.

Bara had also been mentioned as a possible destination for the forward, but according to eSPORTY, they have moved towards Gordon due to the fee involved in a move for Alvarez.

The Argentine scored 36 goals across his two seasons at Manchester City and also helped Pep Guardiola’s side win two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Alvarez has continued to impress at Atletico, scoring 49 goals in two seasons, but is now ready for a fresh challenge.

And speaking earlier this week, Gunners icon Paul Merson urged his old club to make a forward this summer.

“I would get a centre forward this summer, I would go for Julian Alvarez,” Merson said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.

“I’m a big fan. If they could get him I would. I still think they probably need another midfield player as well.”
