An earthquake with a magnitude of 6 struck roughly seven miles south of Honaunau in the South Kona area of Hawaii Island, with residents reporting strong shaking felt across the whole island
A magnitude 6 earthquake has been recorded on Hawaii.
The earthquake occurred about seven miles to the south of Honaunau in the South Kona area of Hawaii Island, according to the US Geological Survey.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami was generated by the earthquake.
The earthquake occurred at 9:46pm (8:46am UK time) and the quake was centred about 3.7 miles east-southeast of the Honaunau-Napoopoo area along the western flank of Mauna Loa, at a depth of 14 miles.
The event was followed by a second quake just six minutes later, this one registered as a r magnitude 3.2 earthquake, just to the northwest of the first about 13 miles beneath the surface.
Reports of shaking poured in, with strong tremors felt across the state as far away as Omao and Hanalei on the neighbouring island of Kauai, Hawaii News Now reports.
Locals took to social media to report the quake. “Earthquake strongly felt in Honolulu, Hawaii,” M. Makelani Tuha said in a post on X. “My building in Kakaako was shaking so hard I thought it might collapse for a second. Freaky! Be safe out there everyone!”
User @FPereira39 added: “Here on Maui our hotel literally shaked at least 30 seconds.”
