Tournament Director Kweku Tandoh has confirmed that Nigerian table tennis star Aruna Quadri will miss the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos due to injury concerns.
The update comes as a major blow for fans hoping to see Nigeria’s biggest table tennis icon compete on home soil during the prestigious international tournament.

“Aruna is not fully fit at the moment,” Tandoh revealed.
According to the tournament director, Quadri was already struggling physically during the recent ITTF World Table Tennis Championships in London.
“He wasn’t fully fit during the World Championships,” he implied.
Tandoh explained that doctors advised the Nigerian star to take four weeks of complete rest in order to aid his recovery and protect his chances of competing in future events.
“The medical advice was very clear,” he noted.
The absence of Quadri also means defending champion Dimitrij Ovtcharov will not face the Nigerian favourite at this year’s tournament.
“It’s unfortunate for the fans,” he added.
Quadri has remained one of Africa’s most successful and recognizable table tennis players for over a decade.
“He’s a huge figure in African table tennis,” many observers believe.
Despite his absence, organisers still expect the WTT Contender Lagos to attract strong global attention due to the quality of players participating.
“The tournament remains massive,” Tandoh stressed.
For the organisers, the message is clear.
Player health comes first.
Recovery is important.
And protecting elite athletes matters more than forcing short-term appearances.
Because long-term success depends heavily on proper injury management and recovery.
