Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has approved Michael Carrick’s appointment as permanent head coach of the resurgent Red Devils.
The direction of travel has been clear for a couple of weeks, and especially in recent days. Current interim boss Carrick will become Man Utd’s next full-time head coach after his spectacular spell in charge.
The club legend has won 10 of his 15 games in charge, losing just twice. Man Utd’s spot in next season’s Champions League is already confirmed, and the players clearly enjoy working with the 44-year-old.
Amad Diallo said as much in a recent interview, describing Carrick as the right man for the job. The former midfielder has completely transformed Man Utd’s fortunes and brought much-needed calm to the club after Ruben Amorim’s tumultuous and disastrous tenure.
Earlier this week, reports emerged that Man Utd were set to formally open talks with Carrick and his entourage to thrash out a deal before the end of the season. Now, his appointment has just moved a little closer.
Ratcliffe approves Carrick appointment
On Thursday, Fabrizio Romano effectively confirmed that the only thing standing between Carrick and the permanent Man Utd job was INEOS chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who had to give his final green light for the appointment.
According to Ben Jacobs, the approval from the co-owner has now arrived. Ratcliffe has given the thumbs up to Carrick’s hire as the Red Devils’ new head coach.
Jacobs also confirmed that formal discussions over a contract are in full swing. If an agreement can be reached, which should not be too difficult, Carrick will be handed a two-year deal with the option for a further season.
The journalist reiterated that Man Utd are looking to reach an agreement with Carrick and to confirm his appointment before the final game of the season away at Brighton on 24 May.
This weekend, Man Utd will host Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford and try to bounce back after a disappointing scoreless draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
